We Make Movies Canada is a lively group of independent film professionals from a variety of disciplines but with a common goal: to nurture talent and promote solidarity among the Toronto independent film community. Like their mentor group We Make Movies LA, the focus is on helping fresh new voices get heard and helping indie filmmakers find the resources to get their vision on the screen.
I had the pleasure and privilege of being invited to participate in We Make Movies Canada’s final script reading before their summer hiatus to fall back, re-group and seek out a more permanent accessible venue to call home. It was a wonderful evening in which four scripts were read: two shorts in their entirety, an excerpt from an imaginative feature inspired by Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, and two episodes of a web-series “Buckethead” by Andrew Heard (@Market4Justice ) that I got to read for. The work was all wildly original and as diverse as the group of actors who turned out to present each work.
The first thing that impressed me about this merry band was with what hospitality and spirit of kinship they welcomed me into their fold. The next thing that wowed me was how astute the audience members were in giving very spot on feedback about each piece, incredibly constructive takeaways for each writer. I would particularly like to give a shout out to “that (wonderful) guy” Adam Hunt who I am hoping will do me the honor of reading one of my scripts as soon as I dare show it to anyone else. And lastly, the wonderful diversity of the participants in respect to backgrounds, preferred genre, and roles played in the film industry. The interaction was underscored by frankness and candor, always with a view to aiding the writer in taking their piece to the next level.
I am greatly looking forward to meeting up with this band of brethren when I return to Toronto, and hopefully having one of my scripts read in order to reap the insights of these wonderful folk!
