Beyond the shock I experienced when I woke up last Saturday and realized the world had not come to an end and that there were only 3 days left until that Blessed Event – I also realized that an entire month had gone by since I last posted! Sometimes life just happens all over the place and foils even our most sincere attempts at getting organized.
All of the recent events, plus the upsetting things that have been happening around the globe, only serve to emphasize just how essential it is that we reach out and support each other. It shouldn’t just be the holiday season that awakens that awareness in us. I admit it, I am just as guilty as the next person of often allowing the trivial to overshadow what should be given real importance.
Here I sit at my PC, wearing a headband that sports antlers and bells, the Turkey stuffed and in the oven. I am thinking about how fortunate we are to be together, to have our health, and to be settling into our “new to us” rented home. There wasn’t much under the tree this year, only a couple of practical gifts for each of us (socks and undies to be exact), wrapped in Easter paper (it was what I had handy and I wasn’t about to spend 1 Euro each for single sheets!), but the girls seem to be enjoying themselves just as much if not more so than previous years.
Since 2004 we have been living from pay-check to pay-check, we’ve never owned our own home, so in some respects the financial crisis strangling Greece at the moment has not really altered our lifestyle much. We never had “under-the-table” income we were hiding from the tax office that allowed us to pay cash for luxuries, I’ve never been able to hire “help” for the housekeeping. As such when I hear people complaining about having to visit the spa only once a month or having the maid come in only bi-weekly I can’t help but chuckle, albeit sardonically.
In this last week of 2012, seeing as the Mayan calendar prophecy was just another sensational misinterpretation, I intend to reassess my priorities, my goals, my definition of “success”. I think that process needs to reach beyond the “what I want” question and extend to include what community of what global society I wish to be a conscious participant in. I’m not quite sure what that vision will entail – but it most certainly won’t contain individuals whose definition of “success” is 15 minutes of post mortem fame for having perpetrated monstrous acts of violence.
May we all have the wisdom to love our neighbors, to acknowledge our weaknesses and reach out for support. Let us set the trivial aside a moment and focus on the people in our lives. Let us share our best and get to work on improving our worst. Join me in visualizing a healthy, happy and humane 2013!
